I Have Seen Mothers

By: Woodrow Odom Lucas

I have seen mothers afraid for their children,

As bombs fall,

As immigration hunts them like rabbits,

As young, confused, tyrants car jack them in daylight,

I have seen mothers afraid for their children,

Hurting,

Wondering?,

How Can I Protect My Children,

As Man Made diseases torment the very immune systems of 7 year olds,

I have seen mothers afraid for their children,

But I tell you, there is a way beyond the fear of even the death of our children,

There is a sight, beyond the darkness that abounds,

There is a vision, of a Lion flying with wings from the sky,

Swooping down and protecting our children from all hurt, harm, and danger,

His name is Jesus,

And I tell you Mothers,

Whether you be Muslim, or Jew, or Hindu, or Wiccan,

My Savior will protect your children.

I have seen mothers afraid for their children,

But I have a Savior who numbered the hairs on their head,

And he will see to it, that they are safe.

This Life

By: Woodrow Odom Lucas

Sometimes as I listen to the Beatles,

I find a sadness that I need to feel,

I find a shadow that resents God for my suffering,

And hates the devil for what he has stolen from me,

Sometimes as I listen to the Beatles,

I find a sadness that I need to feel,

I see mothers of 4 on the street asking me for some change and then bursting into tears as I give her ten dollars.

Sometimes as I listen to the Beatles,

I find a sadness that I need to feel,

And I see a man in bed, begging God for death because he can’t stand the voices in his head any longer.

Sometimes as I listen to the Beatles,

I feel a sadness that I need to feel,

For it reminds me that loss, regret, suffering, sadness, pain, and the shadow are all part of life that that they are supposed to be here.

Sometimes as I listen to the Beatles,

I find a sadness that I need to feel,

But as I keep listening, I begin to enjoy the genius of Paul and John’s songwriting,

And I find myself thinking of all the beautiful things that have happened to me and all the beautiful things I have done,

And I realize, weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning,

Suffering is, but it was created to be temporary,

Whereas Love and Joy are eternal,

And there isn’t one person who has ever lived who won’t know joy and love eternal,

Sometimes as I am listening to the Beatles,

The beauty of their music ignites my soul, and I get a taste of the heaven that awaits us all.

The Light

By: Woodrow Lucas

Sometimes when we’re coming out of darkness,

The light stings our eyes and everything appears just a bit too bright,

And we ask the Lord,

“Am I free?”

And God heals our eyes to see everything that he is doing on our behalf.

And we begin to cry tears of gratitude.

And suddenly our eyes adjust to our new freedom,

And everything seems more beautiful than we could possibly imagine.

And we rejoice, because we realize that the beauty all around us is real.

Joyful Reckoning

By: Woodrow Odom Lucas

As I look back on those days of Joyful Reckoning,

I shed a tear,

I had a wife once and she was the best thing since pancakes, eggs, and sausage,

But I was a confused man, tormented by fears that I did not understand,

And so I lost her,

But as soon as the sun rises,

My love for her never dies,

I just love her differently,

My 3 queens I used to call them,

For my love for my ex-wife and 2 daughters is a rare thing indeed,

You can let go of a relationship,

You can accept divorce,

But you can not let go of love,

For love is the fuel of all that is beautiful and wondrous in this realm,

As I look back on those days of Joyful reckoning,

I shed a tear,

I had a wife once, and she was the best thing since pancakes, eggs, and sausage.

But I was a confused man, tormented by fears that I didn’t understand,

And so I lost her,

But her love for me did not die,

And now we are friends who pray for her new family on Wednesdays.

You can let go of a relationship,

You can accept divorce,

But you cannot let go of love,

For love is the fuel of all that is beautiful and wondrous in this realm.

I am a man of great chaos, for I am berated by shadows that I do not understand.

But in my heart there is great love.

Even God tells me so.

And so I just put one foot in front of the other, one next right thing after one next right thing,

Until the sunshine warms my face with a rainbow beside it.

As I look forward to what awaits me,

I ponder on those coming days of Joyful Reckoning,

And I shed a tear.
